What Is Botulinum toxin?

Botulinum toxin (brands: Botulinum toxin Allergan, Dysport, and newer options like Alluzience and Letybo) is the trade name for botulinum toxin type A.

The treatment of expression lines with Botulinum toxin is one of the best-known and most effective anti-aging therapies worldwide. Today, cosmetic use of Botulinum toxin for facial expression wrinkles is the most popular aesthetic treatment.

How Botulinum Toxin Works

Botulinum toxin is a protein produced by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum. In cosmetic dermatology, it is used in very small, controlled doses to temporarily relax the facial muscles that cause expression wrinkles.

The treatment is minimally invasive, takes place in a short time and gives immediate, natural results.

Action on the Face

Botulinum toxin works by reducing the contraction of the muscles responsible for facial expressions — such as anger, sadness, wonder, or surprise. In this way, wrinkles created by repetitive movements are noticeably smoothed out.

For example, application around the eyes reduces fine radial wrinkles (“crow's feet”), providing a fresher and more rested appearance, without altering the natural expressiveness.

Wrinkle Treatment with Botulinum Toxin

Botulinum toxin is used both preventively and therapeutically for expression wrinkles. With targeted injections, it can treat: forehead wrinkles, interbrow wrinkles (“11”), wrinkles around the eyes.

In addition, botulinum toxin can help improve the oval of the face and smooth neck wrinkles, giving a more youthful and firmer appearance.

Possible Side Effects

When botulinum toxin is applied by a qualified physician, side effects are rare, mild, and transient.

The following may be observed: small bruises at the injection site, temporary asymmetry, which is easily corrected upon re-examination, and a feeling of heaviness or pressure in the first few days.

More serious reactions, such as eyelid ptosis, are extremely rare and usually associated with application by non-specialists.

People who have previously had botulism may experience a reduced response due to the development of antibodies.

Repetition Frequency

To maintain stable and natural results, botulinum toxin treatment is recommended to be repeated 2 to 3 times a year.

In cases of intense muscular activity or increased metabolism, up to 4 sessions per year may be needed.
